Luzzatto, Simone
(1583-1663)
   Italian rabbi. Born in Venice, he served as rabbi there for 57 years. His Socrate espouses the view that human reason is impotent unless aided by revelation. In another work he argued for Jewish toleration largely on economic grounds. He also wrote a treatise defending the authority of tradition and the oral law.
